In 1990, I introduced Nordic Walking to the Crystal Cruises Line. I visited their Century City (LA) headquarters and presented the value of Nordic Walking to their guests. Crystal is the #1 rated line for almost 20 years. They like to offer programs that will enhance voyages and improve passenger’s health. Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi, etc. They loved the idea.
Since then we have had 10 Pair of LEKI poles on their two ships: the Serenity and the Symphony. The program is complimentary and classes are given every day (even in port) at 7:30 am and 5 pm. After a short “quick learn” orientation to technique, the folks walk the 1/3 mile elliptical deck. The love the idea of burning extra calories – it take the guilt out of the dinners and desserts.
Crystal is the only line that offers free Nordic Walking. Occasionally, I see an instructor on low end ships that charge $150 or so for their classes. Booo. I just got back from an 18-day cruise from Singapore to Capetown. Believe me, I got a nice workout – teaching twice a day. The turnout was thin in the beginning, but as guests saw others doing it (and they talked), we built up to a full house! Several ended up buying poles from me directly.
You will find that quality poles are not cheap, and they are very hard to find in sporting stores in the USA. They will show you Trekking poles – they are not the same.
If you want quality poles – get LEKI. If you want an all-inclusive Ultra-luxury cruise, go Crystal. What are you saving your money for? Your net worth will not on your tombstone.
Carpe Diem!
