I keep finding studies that support moderate exercise in your daily life.
Finally, some statistics on just how Americans kill free time instead of exercising. The Streaming Observer recently published the percent of the time people spend on various activities. It won’t add up to 100% since the survey was given to hundreds of respondents.
When amalgamated, here’s the averages.
Reading – 16%
Exercise – 17%
Facebook – 27%
Family – 36%
Socializing – 39%
And the elephant in the room, NetFlix – 71%. By extrapolation, people spend almost ¾ of their time glued to the “boob tube.” The current socially approved “binge watching” of a season’s worth of shows like “Deck of Cards” or “Downtown Abbey” can be relaxing – but not for 6 hours straight. I know a few friends who are kind of proud that they saw a whole season of a show in one sitting (or laying).

Walking outdoors need not be your exercise for the day. A stroll along a creek, a saunter through a forest or pushing a baby carriage are all wonderful things to do. But let’s not call that exercise.
