How’s your back?
You know that Nordic Walking is an excellent fitness routine. Many have learned that their heart rate does indeed go up over normal walking. Now they are finding out that what I’ve said about back support is true.
You can visualize this – or focus on it on your next NW session. Since you are dragging your poles – YES dragging – not picking them up – you will always have one of the poles gripping the surface behind you. You will really feel the support of your back.
LEARN MORE – Benefits
Many of my students are surprised at this benefit. Usually, they hear about heart rate, calories burned, 02 intake increase, etc etc. But this back support thing is real.
You will also find that you do not slouch when walking. The poles tend to keep you upright. That is the proper way to do NW anyway. Many first timers feel they have to look down at the ground in front of them. Trust me, it will be there! :>) Head up..eyes focused on the horizon.
The next time you go out, focus on your back; see if you don’t feel the support. It won’t be much but it WILL be there. Many students with back issues have mentioned this to their doctors. They love it and encourage these guys to keep I up. A strong back helps counter the strain we get from sitting at a desk all day. It feels good to have the little push.
Carpe Diem!
