Nordic Walking around the world

As I travel I get excited when I see folks with their Nordic Walking poles. I see them at the pyramids in Egypt, Mayan Temples in Mexico and in London. Some older folks are getting balance as they walk, but many are taking advantage of the atmosphere to burn a few calories.

Smart, dedicated Nordic Walkers pack their poles into their suitcases to have them wherever they go. You cannot take them aboard aircraft as carry-on. This seems obvious, but I did want to tell you this so you know I advance.  With the rubber tip removed, you have pretty lethal spear. The TSA could confiscate your expensive poles. They don’t save contraband items for later pick up.

Starting to appear are poles that are very easy to travel with as checked baggage. Most suitcases will not hold the 2-section adjustable poles. I’ve even taken mine apart and they still would not fit. A duffle bag is long and works. You may consider getting the new 3-section poles with each being held together by bungees. They kind of accordion out and snap together. They only come in fixed length – I find that a negative. I can’t share my poles with others in this case.

If you are in a strange land, you may need to be cautious of stray dogs. The poles serve as a good defense should you be attacked. Not very likely I agree, but nice to know you can do more than just stand there. Oh, and they will work against shady street thugs. Better than having nothing!

If you do bring your poles, you’ll be the center of attraction as many will ask what the heck they are. It makes for good conversation.  I always stop and talk to the person, as you can see from the photo. Most will accommodate me.  They generally are surprised – Europeans do Nordic Walking as a way of life.

All for now. Check back every now and then.  I try to put a blog on regularly. I can’t do them daily, but as I think of useful info I’ll be here.

Comment if you’d like me to answer anything or cover a topic.

Carpe Diem!!  Seize the day!
