Is it OK to listen to music with headphones while Nordic Walking?

Just one man’s opinion – it depends. Yes and no. I do – but not always.

Nordic Walking is, frankly, more fun with another person. Heck, in Finland, Norway and other Euro countries they do it in groups. In the USA, the activity is still emerging.

Music gets you moving to the beat. How fast do you want to go? Find the beat. Get your Android or iPhone and download your choice of tunes. Ask a teenager to do it for you.

Create a playlist. This is a file of all your favorite ones. You can make one for your fast days and a different playlist for your mellow days. Put an audio book on.

My favorites? The Bee Gees. “Stayin’ Alive.”  The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Any Jimi Hendrix. That’s just me. Whatever gets you going. Remember this is exercise, not a time to look at the flowers on the side of the trail.

Now – a disclaimer. Make sure you can hear the surroundings. If you are in a park, you’re pretty well safe. If you walk on mountain trails, be alert. Mountain lions can sneak up on you. People have been attacked.  Don’t wear headphones. Remember you have poles to fend them off.

On a neighborhood street, dogs can pester you and even <bite>.  Know your surroundings.

The above is strictly my opinion. No special copostatic effects were employed in this blog and no gerbils were hurt while I was typing.

Carpe Diem!
