This time the research comes from Norway.  Nordic Walking started in Scandinavia (Finland) and they do it as a course of the day.

I know you are young pups, but they found that even the elderly should be active and not sedentary.” Who said this?? It wasn’t Capt obvious, it was the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo. The study of older men found that increasing physical activity was as good as quitting smoking.

6,000 Norwegian men born from 1923 to 1932 logged what they did as far as exercise. Their vitals were recorded regularly. For 11 years. Moderate activity meant Nordic Walking, exercise, sports or heavy gardening for at least four hours a week. Cigorous activity involved hard training or competitive sports several times a week.

51% of men who were sedentary in their 70s passed on. While only 25% of those who exercised died.  Whew. .

Doctors love for you to do 30+ minutes of moderate activity six days a week. The dart was thrown at a 40 percent lower risk of death, the researchers found. More exercise reaped even greater benefits, decreasing the odds of death from both heart disease and any cause, the researchers said.

Looking back further, men who were sedentary in their 40s lived fived fewer years on average than those who were the most active.

OK…cause and effect?  Controlled double blind study? – no, but let’s be glad the results were in our favor.

While the study says nothing about women, other research suggests they gain similar benefits. Phillip Sparling, a professor in the School of Applied Physiology at Georgia Tech: “Select exercise activities you enjoy, set a regular time and routine, exercise with friends, consult a personal trainer, make a plan, keep a written record, and share goals with family and friends.”

Sounds lot like Nordic Walking to me!

Carpe Diem
