What exactly is Nordic Walking? | A very brief overview for new walkers

Nordic Walking is a fitness activity usually done on level surfaces, although some small hills are fine. This is NOT mountaineering, where robust trekking poles would be more appropriate. Think Fitness – NOT hill climbing. I do a lot of hiking at Yosemite National Park, Heck, I’ve written two books on hiking up Half Dome there.

That’s a full day round trip that takes you almost a mile up to the top. But you’re not done yet, you need to pull yourself up two cables set at 45 degrees. For 600 feet. Yikes. I’ve done it 40 times (Ego trip). I religiously use trekking (aka Hiking) poles. They are strong, with different straps and heavier.

A variety of manufacturers offer Nordic Walking poles. The poles are lightweight aluminum or carbon fiber. Weight is a key difference from ski poles and trekking poles, but more important is the ability to telescope to the proper length.

The leading manufactuer of all kinds of poles – trekking, ski and Nordic Walking is LEKI.
